Call to Teach Children Personal Finance

Headteachers and campaigners are calling for urgent action to ensure all children learn about personal finance in school.

Under proposed changes to the national curriculum, pupils across England could soon be taught how to manage money, understand debt, and navigate mortgages and tax. The new syllabus is expected to be ready by 2028.

At Queen’s Park Academy in Bournemouth, children are already learning about budgeting and credit. Principal Sarah Simmons says pupils are “switched on” about money and often more savvy than adults.

The charity Young Enterprise has long campaigned for financial education, describing it as a vital life skill. CEO Sarah Porretta says teachers need proper training and support to deliver the lessons confidently.

Other schools, like Leaf Studio Academy, are teaching students about online scams, good and bad credit, and the long-term impact of financial decisions.

Education leaders say without these lessons, young people risk entering adulthood unprepared — regardless of their academic grades.

Prayer Points for Families and Education

  1. Wisdom for Policymakers Pray that government leaders and education officials make wise, compassionate decisions that support families, schools, and vulnerable children.
  2. Provision for Households Ask for divine provision and financial relief for families struggling with rising costs, unemployment, or limited access to resources.
  3. Empowerment Through Education Pray that children and young people receive the tools and knowledge they need to manage money wisely and build secure futures.
  4. Peace and Stability in Schools Lift up teachers, staff, and students — that schools would be places of peace, support, and opportunity, especially amid funding pressures and reform.
