The UK’s Emergency Alert System

The UK’s Emergency Alert System (EAS) is set to be tested again in a nationwide exercise. This system, which was launched in 2023, sends alerts through mobile phones to warn the public of life-threatening emergencies. The alerts cause phones and tablets to vibrate, read the alert aloud, and emit a loud siren-like sound, even if the device is on silent.

The upcoming test is part of the government’s efforts to ensure the system is effective and that the public is prepared for emergencies. The exact date for the test has not been confirmed yet, but it is expected to take place later this year.

During the test, millions of phones and tablets across the UK will receive an alert notification. Users will need to acknowledge the message by swiping or clicking on it. The alert will last for about 10 seconds.

The EAS is based on similar systems used in the US, Canada, the Netherlands, and Japan. It aims to help in life-threatening situations such as severe weather events.
