US President Donald Trump announced that he had a “lengthy and highly productive” phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which they agreed to begin negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. Trump shared this news on his Truth Social platform, stating that both leaders had agreed to have their respective teams start negotiations immediately. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke with Trump about achieving a “lasting, reliable peace”.
Trump mentioned that it was unlikely Ukraine would join NATO, which might be disappointing for Kyiv. He also indicated that he and Putin would meet in Saudi Arabia for further discussions. The phone call between Trump and Putin lasted nearly an hour and a half.
