We’ve all heard it before—perhaps we’ve even said it ourselves: “It is what it is.” This phrase has become a cultural catchphrase for resignation, a way of accepting circumstances as unchangeable. It’s often used to avoid stress, disappointment, or the need to take action. But as Christians, is this the attitude God calls us to have?
The Bible tells us something different. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
This verse challenges the “it is what it is” mindset. Instead of simply accepting things as they appear, we are called to trust God, seek His wisdom, and bring everything before Him in prayer.
The Danger of Passive Acceptance
While some things in life are beyond our control, the attitude of “it is what it is” can become an excuse for complacency. When we say this about a difficult situation, we might be surrendering not to God, but to circumstance. Yet, Scripture tells us to approach life differently:
- Instead of passivity, we are called to prayer. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (Philippians 4:6)
- Instead of resignation, we are called to faith. “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)
- Instead of despair, we are called to hope. “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)
When we rely only on our own understanding, we limit what God can do. We may see a dead-end, but God sees a door we haven’t even considered.
A Call to Action
God invites us to partner with Him in prayer, faith, and obedience. Rather than saying, “It is what it is,” we should be saying, “God, what would You have me do?”
- When facing a challenge at work, instead of accepting frustration, pray for wisdom and favor.
- When dealing with a difficult relationship, instead of giving up, seek God’s direction on how to love and extend grace.
- When struggling with finances, instead of feeling helpless, ask God for provision, stewardship wisdom, and opportunities.
- When waiting on a promise, instead of resigning to doubt, stand on God’s Word and continue believing.
It Is What God Says It Is
The world may say, “It is what it is,” but we serve a God who can turn things around. His plans are higher than ours, His thoughts are beyond ours, and His power is limitless. Instead of settling, let’s submit. Instead of accepting, let’s ask. Instead of resigning, let’s rise up in faith.
So the next time you’re tempted to say, “It is what it is,” stop and ask: “But what does God say about this?” Because it is what He says it is—and that changes everything.
